Sydney Sweeney’s 'The Housemaid' tops HBO Max film charts
Sydney Sweeney’s 'The Housemaid' reached number one on HBO Max’s US film charts after arriving to platform October 9

Sydney Sweeney’s psychological thriller The Housemaid has become the most-watched film on HBO Max in the United States, reaching the top of the platform’s movie charts just days after its streaming debut.
Based on Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel, the film arrived on HBO Max on October 9 2026, following its earlier streaming release on Starz in April.
According to viewership tracker FlixPatrol, it reached number one on the US film charts on October 11 and remained in the top position the following day.
Directed by Paul Feig and written by Rebecca Sonnenshine, The Housemaid stars Sweeney as Millie Calloway, a formerly incarcerated woman who takes a live-in housekeeping job with Nina Winchester, played by Amanda Seyfried. Brandon Sklenar plays Nina’s husband, Andrew, as tensions escalate within the household.
Released in cinemas in December 2025, the thriller reportedly earned $400.5 million worldwide against a production budget of $35 million. Its box office performance led Lionsgate to approve a sequel, while its latest streaming success has renewed attention on the franchise.
On HBO Max, The Housemaid overtook Backrooms, directed by Kane Parsons, and Evil Dead Burn, which debuted on the service on October 2.
The film’s continued popularity comes as audiences await the next instalment, currently scheduled for December 2027.
The sequel is expected to draw from McFadden’s follow-up novel, The Housemaid’s Secret, in which Millie works for a different family.
