Steven Spielberg to oversee 'Transformers 8' as Michael Bay eyes return
The eighth 'Transformers' film does not yet have a release date, with the project still in development

Steven Spielberg is taking a larger creative role in the Transformers franchise as Paramount Pictures develops the eighth live-action film, with Michael Bay in talks to return as director.
Spielberg will remain an executive producer on the franchise but is also expected to oversee the creative aspects of the new film alongside longtime Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. The pair are looking to guide the next chapter in a direction that honours the spirit of the earlier films.
Michael Bay, who directed the first five Transformers films between 2007 and 2017, is in talks to return to the franchise. If a deal is reached, he would direct a script written by Jason Fuchs, whose credits include It: Welcome to Derry.
The new film is expected to be set in the modern day, although plot details and casting have not been revealed. Shia LaBeouf, who starred in the first three films, is not expected to return.
Spielberg was closely involved with the early Transformers films and served as executive producer on the 2007 original and its sequel, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. His increased involvement comes as Paramount moves to give the long-running franchise a new direction following the 2023 release of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
Bay's potential return would reunite him with the franchise after nearly a decade away. His final Transformers film was 2017's Transformers: The Last Knight, following a run of five films that helped establish the series as one of Hollywood's major blockbuster franchises.
The new project is among the major developments at Paramount following its merger with Skydance. The studio is also developing a Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover, with Jurassic World writer Derek Connolly attached to that project.
The eighth Transformers film does not yet have a release date, with the project still in development.
