Bono reveals Dolly Parton got out of bed rest to record her final song with U2

Parton recorded 'Torn' with U2 in June, just two months before her death at the age of 80 on August 25

Bono has revealed that Dolly Parton got out of bed while ill to record what became her final vocal performance, a duet with U2 titled Torn.

The country music icon recorded the song with Bono in June, just two months before her death at the age of 80 on August 25. The track will appear as the closing song on U2's upcoming 16th studio album, Carnaval De Luz.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Bono recalled how Parton made the effort to record the song despite being unwell.

"When she got ill, she got out of her bed to sing this song," Bono said. He added, "And you can hear that. And I can't even listen to it now."

Torn was co-written by Parton, U2 and Snow Patrol's Johnny McDaid. Bono had initially approached Parton about contributing to another project inspired by Irish folk music, but she felt the material was "a little too Irish" for her. Instead, she suggested her own song, Torn, and asked Bono whether he could take it in another direction.

Bono and McDaid subsequently reworked the lyrics around a mother watching her family fall apart. Parton agreed to record the revised version, with Bono recalling that she "sang her heart out" during the session.

Parton was able to hear the finished track before her death and approved the final mix. Producer Garret "Jacknife" Lee said she was proud of her vocal performance and pleased with the finished recording.

The song also features Daniel Lanois on pedal steel, while U2 drummer Larry Mullen Jr. contributes a drum part inspired by Bob Dylan's Most of the Time.

U2 announced Carnaval De Luz on September 24, marking the band's first album of new material in nine years. The 12-track record is scheduled for release on November 13 and will be the band's 16th studio album.

Parton's final recording adds another layer to the upcoming album, with Torn becoming a posthumous collaboration between the country legend and Bono. The song will give fans one final new vocal performance from Parton when Carnaval De Luz arrives in November.
