Hayden Panettiere’s cause of death confirmed as toxic effects of multiple substances, ruled an accident by coroner

Hayden Panettiere’s official cause of death has been confirmed by the Greenville County Coroner’s Office in South Carolina, more than a month after the actor died at age 36.

According to the coroner’s findings, Panettiere died from the toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine. Her death was ruled an accident.

Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid, while 4-ANPP is a chemical precursor associated with the production of fentanyl. Alprazolam, commonly known by the brand name Xanax, is a benzodiazepine. Methocarbamol is a prescription muscle relaxant, while quetiapine is an antipsychotic medication.

Panettiere died on August 16 after a friend called 911 to report an unresponsive woman. Emergency responders attempted to revive her using advanced cardiac life support, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The actor had previously spoken publicly about her struggles with addiction and depression. In an interview with People, she discussed being introduced to medication as a teenager and later struggling with alcohol and opioids.

Panettiere began her career as a child actor, appearing in commercials and television shows before making her film debut with a voice role in A Bug’s Life. She later appeared in Remember the Titans and gained widespread recognition as Claire Bennet on NBC’s Heroes.

She went on to star as Juliette Barnes in ABC’s Nashville and also played Kirby Reed in the Scream franchise, appearing in Scream 4, Scream and Scream VI.

Her death was initially reported in August, with the official findings now confirming the cause and manner of death.
