Shailene Woodley’s 2026 Emmys look has sparked a fierce online fashion debate, prompting her stylist Karla Welch to respond after some viewers criticised the actress’s appearance.

Woodley attended the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles wearing an outfit from Balenciaga’s Fall 2026 Haute Couture collection. The ensemble featured a plunging periwinkle top, oversized embellished trousers, burgundy opera gloves and a colourful statement necklace.

The unconventional outfit quickly divided social media users, with some questioning the styling while others praised Woodley for taking a less traditional approach to the awards ceremony. Comments included claims that the actress needed a new stylist, while another user asked whether she had lost a bet.

Welch addressed the reaction on Threads, making a distinction between fashion criticism and personal attacks.

"Love or hate something fine but it’s an opinion and it can even be a conversation," Welch wrote, before criticising comments she considered "super rude and mean". She added that taking pleasure in such remarks says more about the people making them.

Welch later shared another image of Woodley in the outfit alongside a "Trigger Warning" graphic, signalling that she continued to stand behind the styling choice.

The fashion debate came during a significant night for Woodley professionally. Earlier in September, she won her first Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her role in Paradise. She was recognised at the Creative Arts Emmys for her performance as Annie.

Woodley also changed her appearance for the post ceremony celebrations, replacing the Balenciaga top with a T shirt featuring the 1986 film Home of the Brave. The change gave her a noticeably more casual look after one of the evening’s most debated red carpet appearances.

While reactions to the Balenciaga ensemble remain divided, Welch has made clear that criticism of the outfit is expected, but she has drawn the line at personal attacks against the actress and her styling choices.
