'It's so demeaning and degrading for the girl'

Actor Ayesha Omar has praised Sania Saeed for taking on a character she described as reflective of the difficult realities faced by women in many households.

Omar shared a clip of Saeed discussing her character on Instagram, she said that such characters are not uncommon in society and said: "There are many men and mothers-in-law like these around us. In every class of society. I know quite a few, personally."

Omar described the behaviour portrayed in the story as "demeaning and degrading for the girl".

In the clip shared by Omar, Saeed spoke about the emotional complexity of her character and the way women life and sacrifices are viewed primarily through money and material possessions.

Saeed questioned the idea of measuring a woman's worth by how much she has spent on her family.

"Is the value of her entire life really determined by how much money she has spent?" she said.

According to Saeed, her character's emotional life is largely ignored, despite her efforts to keep her household together and support her son.

"She's only there to help to keep the household running, to make a life for herself, and to keep her son's life on the right track so that he can become successful and have some peace in his life," Saeed said.

She also recalled feeling reluctant to take on the role because of how emotionally frustrating the character was for her.

"Even talking about it is upsetting me," she said. "That's exactly why I kept saying, 'I don't want to do this.' It's very frustrating."

Omar's comments highlight the discussion around the portrayal of difficult family dynamics in Pakistani dramas, particularly stories involving relationships between mothers-in-law, daughters-in-law and other members of the household.
