Jake Gyllenhaal, Phoebe Dynevor lead M Night Shyamalan’s supernatural romance 'Remain'

Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor find themselves at the centre of a mysterious romance in the first trailer for Remain, the upcoming supernatural thriller from filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan and bestselling author Nicholas Sparks.

Gyllenhaal stars as Tate, a reclusive architect who travels to a coastal town to work on a new project, while Dynevor plays Wren, a mysterious woman who unexpectedly enters his life. Their meeting sparks an intense connection, but as their relationship develops, Tate begins to realise that there is far more to Wren and the town around them than he initially understood.

The trailer introduces Tate as a man attempting to move forward following a difficult period in his life. His plans for a fresh start change when he meets Wren, whose presence brings a renewed sense of possibility but also introduces a series of unsettling events.

For Wren, her relationship with Tate appears equally significant. As the two grow closer, the film begins to question the nature of their connection and whether their romance can survive the supernatural forces surrounding them.

Remain combines the romantic storytelling associated with Sparks with Shyamalan's trademark interest in mystery, suspense and the supernatural. The pair developed the story together, with Shyamalan directing the film and Sparks writing a novel based on their shared concept.

The story also explores grief, loss and the possibility of connections continuing beyond death. Tate's experiences are shaped by the death of his sister, who believed that spirits could remain connected to the living. His encounter with Wren ultimately forces him to reconsider ideas he had previously dismissed.

The new trailer gives particular attention to Gyllenhaal and Dynevor's chemistry, presenting their characters' relationship as the emotional heart of the film while gradually introducing the supernatural mystery that threatens to pull them apart.

Gyllenhaal brings his experience in psychological thrillers to the role, having previously starred in films including Nightcrawler, Prisoners and Zodiac. Dynevor, meanwhile, rose to international prominence as Daphne Bridgerton in Bridgerton and has since appeared in films including Fair Play and The Out-Laws.

Their pairing marks one of the film's biggest draws, with Remain giving both actors roles that require them to balance romance with an increasingly unsettling mystery.

The supporting cast includes Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty, Jay O. Sanders, Tracy Ifeachor, Hannah James, Caleb Ruminer, Kieran Mulcare and Maria Dizzia, while Shyamalan also appears in the film.

Remain marks a distinctive collaboration for Shyamalan and Sparks, bringing together two filmmakers known for very different genres. While Sparks' stories traditionally centre on relationships and emotional connections, Shyamalan is known for supernatural and psychological films such as The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs and Split.

The combination promises a film that places Tate and Wren's relationship at the forefront while surrounding their romance with questions about life, death and what may exist beyond the world they know.

Remain is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on February 5, 2027.
