Amy Madigan joins Tom Hanks and Callum Turner in Sony’s baseball film 'The Comebacker', directed by Marielle Heller

Amy Madigan has joined Tom Hanks and Callum Turner in Sony Pictures’ upcoming baseball film The Comebacker, which is described as a love letter to the sport.

Madigan, who recently won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Weapons, will play the owner of the New York Mets in the film. Hanks stars as the team’s pitching coach, while Turner plays a young Mets pitcher whose life changes after he is struck by a batted ball. Patricia Clarkson is set to play the coach’s wife.

The Comebacker is based on a short story by author Dave Eggers. Marielle Heller, whose directing credits include The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Can You Ever Forgive Me? and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, is directing the film from her own screenplay.

Gary Goetzman will produce for Playtone alongside Heller and Leah Holzer for Defiant By Nature. The project is being developed in cooperation with Major League Baseball and the New York Mets, with Working Barn and Charles Miller serving as executive producers.

Production on The Comebacker is scheduled to begin in New York this autumn.

Madigan joins the project following her Oscar-winning performance as Aunt Gladys in Zach Cregger’s horror film Weapons. The win came around 40 years after her first Academy Award nomination for the 1985 drama Twice in a Lifetime.

Her other film credits include Field of Dreams, Pollock and Gone Baby Gone. She is also set to appear in several upcoming projects, including James Ponsoldt’s Apple thriller Sponsor, Ryan Coogler’s The X-Files reboot and Amblin/Netflix’s limited series All the Sinners Bleed.

The Comebacker does not yet have an announced release date.
