Kenan Thompson to replace Simon Cowell as guest judge on 'America’s Got Talent'
Kenan Thompson will fill in for Simon Cowell as guest judge during 'America’s Got Talent’s' September 1 quarterfinals

Kenan Thompson is returning to America’s Got Talent as a guest judge, filling in for Simon Cowell during the show’s Quarterfinals Round 3 episode on September 1.
Thompson will join Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel and Sofia Vergara on the judging panel, with Terry Crews continuing as host.
Cowell, who is also the show’s creator and executive producer, is taking time away from the programme while he undergoes back surgery.
The procedure has been described as routine and is linked to a serious e-bike accident Cowell suffered in August 2020. The accident resulted in a complex spinal injury and a lengthy rehabilitation period.
Thompson previously appeared as a guest judge on America’s Got Talent in 2020, when he sat alongside Klum, Mandel and Vergara during the live quarterfinals.
He was the second guest judge to substitute for Cowell that season, following Kelly Clarkson.
During his previous appearance, Thompson encouraged contestants by saying: “This is incredible. Seize the moment, if you have nerves turn those nerves into superpowers.”
The Saturday Night Live veteran is the first guest judge to take Cowell’s place during this year’s live quarterfinals. Mel B, Mandel and Vergara appeared behind the judging table for this week’s live quarterfinal episodes covering performances and results.
America’s Got Talent announced Thompson’s return on Instagram, describing him as “A comedy legend” taking over the judges’ table.
