New Found Glory guitarist Chad Gilbert dies at 45 as band confirms he passed away peacefully on September 20 at home

Chad Gilbert, guitarist and founding member of pop-punk band New Found Glory, has died at the age of 45.

The band announced Gilbert’s death on Instagram on Sunday, September 20, saying they were “devastated and shocked” by his passing. According to the statement, Gilbert died peacefully in his sleep surrounded by family and friends, with his wife and mother by his side.

“On the morning of September 20th, Chad Everett Gilbert passed away peacefully in his sleep,” the band said.

Gilbert had faced several serious health challenges in recent years. In March, he underwent brain surgery to remove three tumours. He had also previously received treatment for metastatic pheochromocytoma, a rare form of adrenal gland cancer that had spread to his spine and lungs.

Following the announcement, New Found Glory paid tribute to Gilbert and highlighted his contributions to the band. The group credited his guitar playing, songwriting, humour and determination with helping shape its music and career over more than three decades.

Gilbert co-founded New Found Glory in 1997, alongside Jordan Pundik, Ian Grushka and Steve Klein. The band became a prominent name in the pop-punk scene and went on to release 14 studio albums.

One of the group’s best-known songs is “My Friends Over You”, which became a defining track of their career and remains closely associated with the band.

Gilbert was also known for his work beyond New Found Glory, including performances and songwriting projects throughout his career.

The band did not provide further details about his death beyond confirming that he passed away peacefully. Gilbert was 45.
