Returnees become emotional after crossing into Pakistan through Wagah-Attari border

Twenty five Pakistani nationals, released from Indian jails, returned home through the Wagah-Attari border on Saturday, where officials from the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi helped facilitate their repatriation.

The returnees became emotional after crossing the border and setting foot on Pakistani soil. Some broke down in tears, while others offered prayers and prostrated in gratitude.

According to security sources, the returning nationals will undergo routine questioning and complete necessary legal formalities before being handed over to their families.

Officials from the Pakistan High Commission were present at the border to facilitate the repatriation process.

The Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi said efforts would continue for the release and repatriation of other Pakistani nationals currently imprisoned in India.

Under the lists exchanged by Pakistan and India on July 1, 2026, India had provided Pakistan with details of 439 Pakistani or presumed Pakistani prisoners in its jails. The list comprised 386 civilian prisoners and 53 fishermen.

Pakistan, in turn, handed over details of 250 Indian or presumed Indian prisoners in its jails to India. The list included 52 civilian prisoners and 198 fishermen.

Under the 2008 Agreement on Consular Access between Pakistan and India, the two countries exchange lists of prisoners in each other’s custody twice a year, on January 1 and July 1.
