Robert Downey Jr. celebrated 21 years of marriage to Susan Downey with a heartfelt anniversary tribute on Instagram

Robert Downey Jr. has celebrated his 21st wedding anniversary with his wife, Susan Downey, with a heartfelt tribute on social media.

The Marvel star, 61, marked the milestone on Thursday, Aug. 27, sharing a message for Susan, 52, on Instagram. Downey described his wife as his “lioness” and “SuperBuddy” while reflecting on their 21 years of marriage.

“Her to whom all is owed.. The great joy of being led on a path of righteous humility is mine,” Downey wrote in his anniversary post. “She-the lioness - Me-the adult cub / recipient of 21 trips around the sun with my SuperBuddy.”

The actor also shared two images with the tribute. One featured playing cards depicting a king and queen of hearts alongside their pet cat, Monty. The second was a sketch showing the couple embracing, with a small heart above them. Downey also reposted the anniversary message to his Instagram Stories.

Robert and Susan Downey first met on the set of the 2003 film Gothika, which Susan produced and Robert starred in. The couple made their red carpet debut together later that year and became engaged in November 2003.

They married on Aug. 27, 2005, in Long Island, New York. The couple later founded the production company Team Downey and have worked together on projects including Sherlock Holmes and Downey’s Dream Cars.

Robert and Susan share two children, son Exton and daughter Avri. Robert also has a son, Indio, from his previous marriage to Deborah Falconer.

In 2024, Susan spoke about the couple’s approach to maintaining their marriage while managing busy careers. She revealed that they follow a “two-week rule”, making sure they do not go more than two weeks without seeing each other and their family.
