Anna Paquin speaks out on dangers of child stardom
Star says young actors are not as protected as they should be

Anna Paquin is speaking publicly about the darker side of growing up in Hollywood, urging former child actors to support one another and calling for greater protection for young performers.
The Piano and True Blood star, 44, shared a lengthy message on Instagram on August 21, days after the death of fellow former child actor Hayden Panettiere at age 36. Paquin also referenced the deaths of Michelle Trachtenberg and Daveigh Chase, both of whom died before turning 40.
Paquin, who began acting as a child and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress at just 11 for The Piano, said she believes there is a troubling pattern among female performers who enter the entertainment industry at a young age.
"It's not a coincidence that so many former, specifically presexualised female, child 'stars' have profoundly sad lives and untimely ends," she wrote.
She added that young performers were not adequately protected by the systems that were supposed to safeguard them, writing, "We were not as protected by the 'systems' that look great on paper, as we are supposed to be."
Paquin described former child actors as belonging to a "strange small club" and used her platform to offer support to others who may have experienced difficulties after growing up in the entertainment industry.
"You are worthy of support no matter how our industry made us feel," she wrote, encouraging people to contact her directly if they need someone to listen.
"Literally DM me. I believe you and I will stand by your side," Paquin added before concluding her message with a simple reminder: "you aren't alone."
Her comments come amid renewed discussion about the experiences of child stars following Panettiere's death. Panettiere, who became known for Heroes and Nashville, died on August 16 at age 36. Officials have not yet announced a final cause of death, with toxicology results still pending.
Paquin also mentioned Trachtenberg, who died in February 2025 at 39. Her death was ultimately attributed to complications of diabetes mellitus and was ruled natural. Chase, known for The Ring and Donnie Darko, died at 35 in June 2026; a medical examiner's report listed AIDS as her cause of death, with chronic polysubstance use among other significant conditions.
The actress's message received support from several other former child stars, including Shiri Appleby, Alyssa Milano and Mara Wilson.
Melissa Gilbert, who began acting on Little House on the Prairie at age 10, also shared Paquin's message on Instagram and said she planned to discuss the issue further.
"Thank you Anna. Someone has to say something," Gilbert wrote. "Someone has to change this. Someone has to help."
Paquin's comments are particularly personal given her own experience as a child performer. While her early career brought enormous success, she has previously spoken about how difficult it was to navigate fame at such a young age.
Her latest statement does not focus on her own experiences alone. Instead, Paquin is using the deaths of several former child stars to call attention to the wider systems surrounding young performers and the need for people who grew up in the industry to have greater support.
"Have each other's back," she wrote, suggesting that creating a stronger support network could make it less frightening for former child actors to speak publicly about what they experienced.
