Dave Bautista lands Kratos role as Amazon’s ‘God of War’ makes a major casting change
The Prime Video series will restart filming in Vancouver this autumn after a major cast change forced a reset

Dave Bautista is officially stepping into the role of Kratos for Prime Video’s God of War, taking over from Ryan Hurst after the original actor suffered a serious injury during production. The casting change marks a major reset for Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television as they prepare to resume work on the highly anticipated adaptation of the PlayStation video game franchise.
Bautista has now closed his deal to portray the central character, following reports earlier this month that he was in talks for the part. The former professional wrestler brings extensive action experience to the role, having built a successful film career through projects including Guardians of the Galaxy, Dune and other major productions. His physical background is also expected to help with the demanding requirements of playing Kratos.
The recasting became necessary after Hurst tore his bicep while performing a stunt in late June, around four months into filming. The injury required surgery and a lengthy recovery, making it difficult for the production to wait for his return without pushing the schedule significantly into 2027. Amazon and Sony subsequently decided to recast Kratos so production could move forward later this year.
The change also means the series is effectively starting again. Deadline reported that no footage from the original shoot will be used in the new version. Preparation is scheduled to begin ahead of a mid October production restart in Vancouver, where the series has been based. Frederick E.O. Toye, who directed the first two episodes with Hurst, is also expected to return to direct the new iteration.
The series remains based on the later Norse era of the God of War franchise. The story centres on Kratos and his young son Atreus, played by Callum Vinson, as they travel to fulfil a family promise involving the ashes of Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother. Their journey also explores Kratos’ attempts to guide his son while Atreus challenges his father to become a better parent and person.
Bautista’s arrival gives the series a new interpretation of one of gaming’s most recognisable characters. Kratos is known for his imposing physical presence, brutal combat skills and complicated history as a Spartan warrior who became a god. The live action adaptation is expected to focus heavily on his relationship with Atreus, which became central to the storytelling of the most recent games.
The wider cast includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor and Teresa Palmer as Sif. The series comes from showrunner Ronald D. Moore and is being produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions.
The production originally began filming in Vancouver in February under a two season order, with the intention of shooting the seasons back to back. Bautista’s casting allows that overall plan to continue despite the disruption caused by Hurst’s injury.
