Caitlyn Jenner backs Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White as debate over transgender athletes in the WNBA intensifies

Caitlyn Jenner has voiced support for former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White as debate over transgender athlete participation in the WNBA continues.

Jenner, a former Olympic gold medalist who publicly transitioned in 2015, discussed the issue during an interview with Fox News. She said Freedom and White are highlighting what she described as a contradiction in the WNBA’s approach to transgender athletes.

Both former NBA players have indicated that they want to enter the WNBA draft in 2027, saying they intend to test the league’s player eligibility policies.

Freedom recently shared a video of himself signing a document asking the WNBA to accept his “decision to enter the player pool for the 2027 WNBA Draft.” He later posted a workout video on social media referring to his campaign as “The Transition.”

White subsequently announced plans to declare for the WNBA Draft. White, who played three NBA games during his career, has also made comments about identifying as transgender for the purpose of professional basketball.

The controversy comes amid broader discussions about transgender athletes in women’s sports. The debate intensified after Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham spoke publicly about her views on protecting female athletes, prompting criticism as well as demonstrations of support.

The WNBA has said there are currently no immediate player eligibility issues affecting the league. Following an anti-hate task force meeting involving team general managers and presidents, the league said it opposed efforts that use the issue to demean or marginalise people.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has previously said the league would approach transgender athlete participation “thoughtfully” and “respectfully.” She also noted that WNBA player eligibility rules are collectively bargained.

The debate over transgender athletes and women’s sports is expected to continue as Freedom and White pursue their stated plans for the 2027 WNBA Draft.
