Patrick Ball teases what’s ahead for Langdon in 'The Pitt' season 3

The Emmy nominee said the scripts are "really good" and that he believes viewers will be happy with what is coming

Patrick Ball is teasing what fans can expect from Dr. Frank Langdon when The Pitt returns for its third season, revealing that his character has found his footing again after the events of season 2.

Speaking to TV Insider, Ball said production is already well underway, with the cast working on the fifth of the season's 15 episodes. While he could not reveal specific plot details, the actor said the scripts are "really good" and that he believes viewers will be happy with what is coming.

Langdon entered season 2 in a very different place from the confident doctor viewers met in the first season. Following his rehab and a 10-month absence, he struggled with his confidence before gradually finding his way back into the emergency department.

Ball said season 3 picks up directly after Langdon's season 2 journey, with the character now back in the ER and returning to the fast-paced medical work where he feels most comfortable. "I'm now back in the pit, and I've been back in the pit, and I've sort of found my feet a little bit," he said. "And so I'm back in the fun stuff."

The actor also teased that Langdon will have plenty of relationships to navigate in the new season. His dynamic with Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, played by Noah Wyle, remains particularly important, with Ball saying there is "a lot more to unpack there."

Langdon's relationships with Dana, Mel, Santos and Whitaker will also continue to develop. Ball additionally highlighted his character's connection with McKay, played by Fiona Dourif, who is also in recovery. He said he would like to explore the shared experience between the two characters further.

Season 3 will also explore what happens at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center under different leadership. With Robby away, Al-Hashimi has been running the department for several months, creating a new dynamic for the staff. Ball said it will be interesting to see what the hospital feels like under her leadership and with new medical students joining the team.

Ball also revealed that fans will learn another unexpected fact about Langdon, similar to the character's season 2 revelation that he enjoys historical reenactments. "We are working on an episode right now where I get a fun new nugget," he teased, although he did not reveal what it is.

The Pitt season 3 is currently in production and is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max in 2027.
