Kingdom Hearts series announced for Disney+

Disney+ has greenlit new Kingdom Hearts series, with Tetsuya Nomura and Square Enix involved in project

Disney has announced a new Kingdom Hearts series for Disney+, with the project revealed during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim.

The series is being developed in partnership with Kingdom Hearts creator Tetsuya Nomura and the creative team at Square Enix.

According to Disney, the project will reimagine the game franchise through a brand-new story while expanding the Kingdom Hearts universe and featuring its established characters.

Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family, said the series would offer fans a new way to experience the world established through the games.

“Kingdom Hearts has captivated gamers everywhere with its unique blend of adventure and imagination,” Davis said.

“There’s something really exciting about taking a world fans have spent years exploring through the games and bringing it to life in a completely new way. And with a creative team that is working closely with the legendary Tetsuya Nomura, our new series will be unmistakably ‘Kingdom Hearts,’ while giving fans a whole new way to experience the world they love.”

Disney has not announced a release date, episode count or voice cast for the series. Details about the new storyline and how it will connect with the existing Kingdom Hearts games also remain undisclosed.

The announcement adds Kingdom Hearts to Disney+’s growing slate of original animated programming.

The platform’s animated series lineup also includes Dragon Striker, Phineas and Ferb and Big City Greens, while upcoming projects include Messi and the Giants, Warrior Cats and Journey.

The Kingdom Hearts franchise began as a collaboration between Disney and Square Enix, combining characters and settings from Disney properties with original characters and elements created for the game series.

The Disney+ adaptation is expected to expand the franchise beyond its existing video game format, with Nomura and Square Enix involved in bringing the new story to the screen.
