More Lord of the Rings game remasters confirmed by Aspyr

Aspyr confirms more classic Lord of the Rings games will be re-released on modern platforms following War in the North

Aspyr has confirmed that more classic The Lord of the Rings games are being prepared for modern platforms following the surprise re-release of The Lord of the Rings: War in the North.

The developer revealed its plans in a press release accompanying The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition.

The new version marks Aspyr’s first Lord of the Rings title, with the company indicating that more classic games from the franchise will follow.

"Fans can look forward to even more classic releases by Aspyr from the beloved franchise in the future!" the company said in the statement.

Aspyr has not confirmed which Lord of the Rings games will be next. The studio has previously focused heavily on bringing games to Nintendo Switch, raising the possibility that titles such as Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor or Middle-earth: Shadow of War could eventually appear on Switch 2.

However, fans may also be hoping to see games originally published by Electronic Arts return to modern hardware. Potential candidates include The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, the movie tie-in released during the PlayStation 2 era, as well as The Lord of the Rings: Conquest.

Strategy games including The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth could also be candidates for re-release, although their availability may depend on licensing and ownership arrangements.

Warner Bros. holds the rights to the Lord of the Rings franchise, while EA published several of the games from the early and mid-2000s. The licensing arrangements surrounding older games can make modern re-releases complicated.
