'House of the Dragon' reveals how the epic Battle of Tumbleton came together

House of the Dragon went all out for the season 3 finale's Battle of Tumbleton, with the production team creating a massive medieval village and combining practical effects, prosthetics and visual effects to bring the devastating battle to life.

The climactic battle, featured in the finale "The Treasons at Tumbleton", transforms the town into a chaotic war zone as the conflict between the Blacks and Greens reaches a bloody turning point.

Showrunner Ryan Condal described the sequence as becoming "quite apocalyptic very quickly", with the destruction of Tumbleton intended to convey the devastating consequences of a civil war fought with dragons.

The production built a large medieval village set at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, London. Rather than relying entirely on computer-generated environments, the filmmakers used physical sets and repeatedly rebuilt and destroyed sections of the village to show the progression of the battle.

The sequence also required extensive coordination between the actors, stunt performers and visual-effects teams. Dragons such as Ulf White's Silverwing were brought into the action through CGI, while practical effects and prosthetics helped make the violence feel more immediate.

One of the battle's most memorable moments sees Lord Ormund Hightower, played by James Norton, confront Ser Roderick Dustin, known as Roddy the Ruin. Their brutal encounter eventually ends with both men being consumed by dragonfire. Norton later described the filming process as highly choreographed, with stunt coordinator Rowley Irlam helping coordinate the complicated sequence.

Ulf's betrayal is another major part of the sequence. After switching allegiance to the Greens, the dragonrider turns against them during the fighting, unleashing devastating dragonfire that helps destroy Tumbleton and changes the course of the battle.

The result is one of the largest and most destructive sequences House of the Dragon has attempted, setting up the consequences that will carry into the show's fourth and final season.
