Tate McRae and Jack Hughes breakup after months of keeping their relationship private

Tate McRae and New Jersey Devils star Jack Hughes have reportedly ended their relationship after months of keeping their romance largely away from the public eye.

Page Six reported on August 7 that the 23 year old singer and 25 year old NHL player had called it quits. The pair never formally announced their relationship, although their repeated appearances together had fuelled speculation for months.

The reported split comes after McRae and Hughes were first linked in late 2025. Their connection became a talking point after the singer was seen attending Hughes' hockey games and the pair were spotted together in New York City. In March, Us Weekly reported that sources close to the situation described them as exclusively dating.

According to that earlier report, Hughes had initially contacted McRae through Instagram and started a conversation with McRae. A source said at the time that the pair were enjoying getting to know each other and that McRae had been supportive of his hockey career.

Their relationship remained relatively private even as public interest grew. Hughes also appeared reluctant to discuss his personal life publicly. In a July interview with E! News, he said he considered himself a normal person who spent time with family and friends and was simply doing his thing.

By the summer, however, speculation about the couple's status had intensified. They were both seen at several high profile events but were not consistently photographed together. Reports in July suggested that the pair had grown distant, although neither McRae nor Hughes publicly confirmed that they had separated at the time.

The latest report is complicated by conflicting accounts over who made the decision to end the relationship. According to Page Six, one source claimed Hughes ended things after seeing what he considered red flags and had already begun seeing other people. Sources close to McRae, however, reportedly offered a different version, saying that the singer was the one who ended the relationship.

Because neither McRae nor Hughes has publicly explained the circumstances of the reported breakup, the precise reason for the split remains unconfirmed. The competing accounts should therefore be treated as claims from unnamed sources rather than established facts.

McRae has also recently spoken about her approach to keeping her personal life private. In an August interview with Variety, she addressed scrutiny surrounding her relationships and said she preferred to protect the parts of her life that matter to her rather than allow outside speculation to dominate them.

The singer's connection with Hughes had attracted particular attention because both were already prominent in their respective fields. McRae has established herself as a major pop performer, while Hughes is one of the New Jersey Devils' leading players and a member of the Hughes hockey family.
