Universal confirmed sequel reaches cinemas on December 4 with Kristen Bell joining David Harbour in festive chaos

Universal has officially unveiled the first trailer for Violent Night 2, offering fans their first look at David Harbour's return as the unconventional Santa Claus. The sequel is set for a theatrical release on December 4 and promises to build on the action, dark humour and festive carnage that made the original film a surprise hit in 2022.

The trailer reveals that the story takes place shortly after the events of the first film. Following his violent confrontation with armed criminals in the original movie, Santa appears to have paid an unexpected price for his actions. He has lost his magical powers after finding himself placed on the naughty list, forcing him to take an ordinary job working at a shopping mall during the Christmas season.

Even without his powers, Santa quickly finds himself facing another dangerous group of criminals. The footage shows David Harbour's character once again embracing brutal combat, using improvised weapons and his trademark determination to protect innocent people despite no longer possessing the magical abilities that previously gave him an advantage.

One of the biggest additions to the sequel is Kristen Bell, who joins the franchise as Mrs Claus. While Universal has not revealed extensive plot details about her character, the trailer confirms she will play a significant role alongside Harbour as the festive duo confront a fresh threat.

The trailer opens with Santa delivering a familiar message before quickly reminding viewers that this version of Father Christmas operates under very different rules. "On Christmas, I deliver presents to nice little boys and girls. If you're naughty, I deliver something else, justice," he declares before the footage shifts into a series of explosive action sequences.

Humour remains a key part of the sequel's identity. In one memorable moment, Santa tells children gathered at the shopping mall that Christmas may not happen this year. When they ask why, he simply explains that he ended up on the naughty list, while refusing to reveal exactly what earned him that punishment. The trailer then cuts between his explanation and several bloody fight scenes, highlighting the film's blend of comedy and violent action.

The new shopping mall setting also introduces a different backdrop from the isolated family estate featured in the first film. Packed with holiday shoppers, decorations and seasonal festivities, the mall appears to offer plenty of opportunities for large scale action sequences as Santa battles criminals in full public view.

Universal has also introduced a new villain named Mason, played by Jared Harris. While the trailer confirms Mason leads the latest group of antagonists, the studio has deliberately kept his motives hidden. It remains unclear whether his conflict with Santa connects directly to the events of the first film or represents an entirely new threat.

The original Violent Night earned praise for combining festive traditions with action inspired by classic revenge thrillers, while David Harbour's performance helped establish the unconventional Santa as a fan favourite. The first trailer suggests the sequel intends to expand that formula by raising the stakes, introducing new allies and exploring what happens when Santa must save Christmas without the magical powers that once defined him.
