Crackdown targets unsafe public transport

Authorities have launched a crackdown against public transport vehicles lacking fire extinguishers, carrying multiple large gas cylinders and failing to provide emergency exits despite repeated warning notices.

During the operation, conducted jointly by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), Traffic Police and Civil Defence, 31 public transport vehicles were impounded while 27 were challaned. The concerned magistrates imposed cumulative fines of Rs510,000.

The secretary of the RTA has directed all inspectors to conduct daily field inspections to ensure installation of modern and functional fire extinguishers in public transport vehicles.

Joint teams carried out operations on GT Road, Adiala Road, Chakri Road, Murree Expressway and near Rawat Chowk against vehicles violating safety rules.

Deputy Commissioner Nadeem Nasir said passengers' lives were a priority for the administration. Referring to the recent fire incident involving transport vehicles in Murree, he said any vehicle operating without fire extinguishers would face legal action.
