Drinking water camps set up for flood victims

Residents evacuated from localities in Muridke, Sheikhupura, Ferozewala

The local administration has established clean drinking water camps for flood-hit people for supply in the affected areas of Muridke and Ferozewala.

Bottled drinking water is being distributed at the camps.

Field staff of the Punjab Saaf Pani Authority reached Khan Colony in Ferozewala to ensure the provision of clean drinking water.

According to an official statement, flood victims in Muridke, Sheikhupura, Hakimpura, Ferozewala, Pathan Colony and other affected areas were being shifted to safe locations and relief camps.

Rescue teams were using boats to ensure the evacuation of residents along with their essential belongings.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif directed authorities to ensure the uninterrupted supply of medicines, food and other essential items for the flood victims. Meals were being provided to all affected families along with dry milk and biscuits.

Policewomen

Addressing the passing-out parade of Lady Recruit Course-18 at the Police Training College, Chung, the chief minister said the graduating batch of 1,156 women was the largest in the province's history, while more than 6,000 women were serving in Punjab Police.

She said the government was committed to making Punjab's cities, roads and streets completely safe for women.

Addressing the inspector general of police, she called for paving the way for Punjab's first woman IG.

The CM said unnecessary layers of protocol had been removed and she remained in direct contact with the police.

She claimed that suspects were now being arrested within two hours and sensitive districts often went days or even weeks without any major crime being reported.

Electric buses

In another development. Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz inaugurated 77 electric buses on 17 routes in seven more districts - Vehari, Lodhran, Kasur, Gujrat, Narowal, Sheikhupura and Nankana Sahib.

With the addition, the number of operational electric buses has increased to 588 across 36 districts.

Another 101 buses have reached nine districts, while 488 more are expected to arrive by the end of August.

A handout added that 1,500 more electric buses would be introduced in every tehsil after the completion of the ongoing district-level project.
