Will Anna Kendrick's ‘Embassy’ become MGM+'s next breakout thriller?

Series follows diplomat trapped inside London mission after mercenaries attack, with global streaming rollout

Anna Kendrick's upcoming action thriller Embassy has officially secured its U.S. streaming home, with MGM+ confirming it will premiere the six part series for American audiences. The announcement marks another major step for the international production, which has already attracted global distribution deals ahead of its debut.

Created and written by Rom Lotan, Embassy places Kendrick in the lead role as Layla, an American diplomat stationed in London. The series centres on a violent crisis after armed mercenaries storm the U.S. embassy, forcing Layla into an impossible situation. She must decide whether to protect the American ambassador or carry out his instructions to evacuate a high value asset being held inside the diplomatic compound.

Joining Kendrick is Outlander star Sam Heughan, who plays Layla's former fiancé and a British SAS soldier. Academy Award winner J K Simmons portrays the U.S. ambassador at the centre of the unfolding emergency. The combination of political intrigue, military action and personal conflict forms the backbone of the thriller.

The project is directed by John Strickland, known for Bodyguard, alongside Christian Alvart, whose previous credits include Case 39. Their involvement signals a production aiming to blend large scale action with tense character driven storytelling.

MGM+ confirmed that the series will launch not only in the United States but also across several international territories, including Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Colombia and Argentina. The deal significantly expands the programme's global reach.

Other major markets had already secured rights before the latest announcement. Prime Video previously acquired Embassy for the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, France, Australia and New Zealand, while ZDF picked up the series for Germany. The international rollout reflects strong confidence in the show's commercial appeal before audiences have even seen the first episode.

Michael Wright, Global Head of MGM+, praised the production while announcing the acquisition. He described Embassy as an exciting addition to the platform's growing slate, highlighting its cast and creative team. Wright also said the series reinforces MGM+ as a destination for cinematic storytelling created for modern television audiences.

The series is produced by AGC Television, Ascendant Fox and Turbine Studios. Executive producers include Rom Lotan, John Strickland, Hester Ruoff, Bart Ruspoli, Matt Mitchell, Daniel Hetzer, Jakob Neuhausser, Justin Thomson, David Tanner, Stuart Ford, Lourdes Diaz and Miguel A Palos Jr. Worldwide sales are handled by AGC International.

Filming took place on location in Cologne and London, providing authentic European settings for the political thriller. According to the official synopsis, Layla must rely on her instincts and reluctantly work alongside her former fiancé as a wider conspiracy begins to emerge during the tense hours before extraction.

For Kendrick, Embassy represents another high profile television role following her successful film career, which includes A Simple Favor. Heughan brings experience from action and drama projects, while Simmons adds further prestige after acclaimed performances across film and television.
