Small traders seek industrial zones, relief

Commerce minister agrees to simplify rules, establish dedicated estates

KARACHI:

Small traders and manufacturers have called for dedicated industrial zones and regulatory relief as Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan pledged to simplify business procedures and facilitate small and medium enterprises (SMEs), according to a statement on Monday.

The demand was raised during a meeting between the minister and a delegation of the Islamabad Chamber of Small Traders and Small Industries (ICSTSI).

The delegation welcomed the recent revision in the State Bank of Pakistan's SME definition, saying it would enable more businesses to qualify for financial support. However, they highlighted that a large segment of Pakistan's small business community remained self-financed and often avoided formal registration due to complicated procedures, audits and compliance costs.

Participants called for dedicated small industrial zones, particularly in Islamabad, equipped with essential infrastructure such as electricity, gas, water and road access. Many small manufacturers currently operate from residential areas due to the high cost of setting up formal units.

Khan agreed that organised industrial estates for SMEs would improve productivity and employment opportunities. He said the government was committed to reducing unnecessary regulatory hurdles and modernising business processes through digitalisation.
