Callum Turner enters cyberpunk world in first ‘Neuromancer’ teaser ahead of January Apple TV debut

William Gibson classic reaches screen after decades as series arrives with star filled cast and futuristic vision

Apple TV has released the first teaser for Neuromancer, offering audiences their first glimpse of the long awaited adaptation of William Gibson's groundbreaking cyberpunk novel. The streaming service also confirmed that the series will premiere on January 22, marking the first screen adaptation of the influential science fiction classic after decades of unsuccessful development attempts.

The teaser introduces Callum Turner as Henry Dorsett Case, a once brilliant hacker whose career collapsed after his nervous system was deliberately damaged, leaving him unable to access cyberspace. Although the preview keeps much of the story under wraps, it establishes the sleek futuristic aesthetic and technologically driven world that helped make Gibson's 1984 novel one of the defining works of modern science fiction.

Apple officially ordered the series in 2024, with Graham Roland and JD Dillard developing the adaptation. Roland serves as showrunner and executive producer, while Dillard directs the pilot and also executive produces. Skydance Television produces the series in partnership with Anonymous Content and Apple Studios.

According to Apple's official synopsis, Neuromancer follows Case, a damaged elite hacker who receives an opportunity to reclaim his former abilities after being recruited for a dangerous mission. Working alongside Molly, a deadly assassin with cybernetic enhancements, Case becomes entangled in a high stakes conspiracy involving one of the world's most powerful artificial intelligences.

Alongside Turner, the series features Briana Middleton as Molly, one of the novel's most recognisable characters. The ensemble cast also includes Joseph Lee, Clémence Poésy, Mark Strong, Peter Sarsgaard, Emma Laird, Dane DeHaan, André De Shields, Max Irons and Marc Menchaca. The combination of established stars and emerging talent has helped generate significant anticipation among science fiction fans.

The teaser places considerable emphasis on the visual identity of Gibson's universe, featuring towering cityscapes, advanced technology, virtual reality interfaces and neon lit environments that have become synonymous with cyberpunk storytelling. While many later films, television series and video games drew inspiration from Neuromancer, this marks the first time Gibson's original novel has received a full screen adaptation.

Published in 1984, Neuromancer won the Hugo Award, Nebula Award and Philip K Dick Award, making it one of the few novels to achieve science fiction's prestigious "triple crown". Its concepts surrounding cyberspace, artificial intelligence, corporate power and digital identity influenced generations of creators, including filmmakers, game developers and technology innovators. The novel is widely regarded as one of the most important works in the cyberpunk genre.

Attempts to adapt the book have circulated in Hollywood since the late 1980s, with several directors and studios attached over the years before projects stalled in development. Apple's television adaptation finally brings the landmark novel to the screen after more than four decades of speculation.

With its January 22 premiere date now confirmed, Neuromancer is positioned as one of Apple's biggest genre releases.
