The future of Vinland Saga season three remains uncertain after manga creator Makoto Yukimura confirmed that work on the next instalment is not currently underway.

Yukimura shared the update in response to a fan asking about the anime’s continuation on X.

Neither Kodansha, which publishes the Vinland Saga manga, nor MAPPA, the studio behind the second anime season, has issued an official announcement about a third season.

Based on Yukimura’s manga, Vinland Saga follows Thorfinn, a young Icelandic warrior whose life changes after the death of his father, Thors.

Seeking revenge against the Viking leader Askeladd, Thorfinn becomes a ruthless fighter, only to lose his purpose when Askeladd dies.

The story takes a different direction in its second season, which aired in 2023 and was produced by MAPPA after Wit Studio animated the first season in 2019.

Thorfinn becomes a slave on a Danish farm, where friendships and painful reflection lead him to reconsider his violent past and embrace his father’s pacifist beliefs.

The second season concludes with Thorfinn determined to find Vinland, a land where he hopes to build a community free from war and violence. A third season would continue his journey, although its production status remains unclear.

One factor that can complicate anime production is the production committee model, in which several companies share the costs and responsibilities of developing a series.

Vinland Saga’s production committee includes Twin Engine, Kodansha, Production I.G. and MAPPA.

Despite the series’ established audience, no release date or production timeline has been announced for Vinland Saga season three.
