Robert Pattinson reveals Matt Damon kept screaming between ‘The Odyssey’ takes
Actor later explained unusual routine helped create battle worn sound for Odysseus, leaving cast amazed

Matt Damon left his The Odyssey co stars both baffled and impressed after an unusual pre filming routine sparked concern on set before they discovered the surprising reason behind it.
During promotional interviews for Christopher Nolan's epic adaptation of Homer's ancient poem, Robert Pattinson revealed that he initially believed something had gone seriously wrong when he repeatedly heard Damon shouting from the trailer parked beside his own. The loud vocal exercises became such a regular occurrence that Pattinson briefly wondered whether the Oscar winning actor was arguing with someone or experiencing some kind of emergency.
Instead, Damon was carrying out an intense preparation technique designed to permanently roughen his voice for scenes as the ageing Greek hero Odysseus.
Speaking in an interview with MTV UK, Pattinson described the experience with humour. He said Damon was "screaming and screaming and screaming" in his trailer, adding that because Damon is such a kind person, the noises seemed completely unexpected. Pattinson joked that he initially thought his co star was having "a really bad toilet experience" before learning the truth.
Once the mystery was solved, Pattinson discovered Damon was deliberately pushing his voice to sound older and more weathered, matching a character who has endured years of war, hardship and an exhausting journey home. Pattinson even joked that Damon appeared to be "taking years off" his own life through the demanding vocal preparation.
Tom Holland also heard the unusual routine while filming and praised Damon's commitment to the role. According to Holland, the preparation demonstrated the level of dedication Damon brought to Nolan's ambitious production, calling the process "amazing."
The vocal work formed only one part of Damon's physical transformation for The Odyssey. Earlier this year, the actor revealed on the New Heights podcast that Nolan wanted Odysseus to appear lean but powerful rather than heavily muscular. Damon said he reduced his weight to 167 pounds through disciplined training and a strict diet after previously weighing between 185 and 200 pounds.
The actor explained that eliminating gluten from his diet also played an important role in helping him reach the required physique. Damon noted that he had not been that light since his high school years, making the transformation particularly demanding.
The preparation marked a sharp contrast with earlier points in Damon's career, including his role in The Informant!, when he intentionally gained around 30 pounds to portray the title character. At the time, he famously described consuming fast food, snacks and dark beer to achieve the heavier appearance required for that performance.
Nolan's The Odyssey has attracted widespread attention for its scale, ensemble cast and practical filmmaking techniques. Damon leads the film as Odysseus, with Anne Hathaway portraying Penelope, Tom Holland playing Telemachus, Robert Pattinson appearing as Antinous, Zendaya starring as Athena and Charlize Theron taking on the role of Circe. The cast also includes Lupita Nyong'o, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Will Yun Lee, Mia Goth, Jimmy Gonzales and Elliot Page
