Anne Hathaway has opened up about the emotional journey behind her third pregnancy, revealing that she and husband Adam Shulman entered the experience with very little expectation that they would be welcoming another child.

The Oscar winning actress, who announced on June 19 that she is expecting her third baby, shared that becoming pregnant at the age of 43 felt like an extraordinary surprise after the couple accepted that the chances were extremely slim. Speaking at the New York premiere of The Odyssey on July 14, Hathaway explained why she previously described the pregnancy as a "buzzer beater" during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

Reflecting on the experience, Hathaway said that hope naturally changes with age. She explained that while optimism never completely disappears, the odds can feel dramatically smaller as time goes on.

"There's always hope until there's not, but when you get to a certain age, that hope looks like 1% to 2%," Hathaway said. "So we just decided to see where life took us, with a very, very healthy, realistic expectation, which was very low."

The actress added that she and Shulman are overwhelmed with gratitude because they understand that the journey to parenthood is not the same for every family. Hathaway acknowledged that many people struggle with fertility or never experience the opportunity to have children, making her current pregnancy something she considers an enormous blessing.

"We're overjoyed because we just know from personal experience that not everybody gets this, and certainly not when you want it, sometimes not ever," she said.

Hathaway and Shulman, who married in 2012, are already parents to sons Jonathan, 10, and Jack, 6. The couple have generally kept their family life private while occasionally sharing glimpses of their parenting experiences during interviews.

The actress announced her pregnancy through an Instagram video that showed her wearing a flowing white dress while Barbara Lewis' classic song "Baby I'm Yours" played in the background. The clip revealed her growing baby bump and was met with congratulations from fans and fellow celebrities.

Following the announcement, a source close to Hathaway said the actress remains focused on both her expanding family and her professional commitments. According to the source, Hathaway has approached the promotional campaign for The Odyssey with gratitude and professionalism while preparing for life as a mother of three.

Although Hathaway has not revealed the baby's sex, she recently reflected on raising two sons while appearing on PEOPLE's World's Most Beautiful 2026 cover. Calling herself a "tomboy", she joked that being a boy mum has influenced the way she dresses because she always needs to be ready for an impromptu basketball game or energetic family activity.

She also laughed about the realities of parenting young boys, saying she has learned to dress wisely because there is always a chance that something will be thrown at her before breakfast.

Hathaway stars in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey as Penelope alongside Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron. While promoting the epic film, the actress has also embraced sharing the personal joy surrounding her growing family.
