Craig Melvin addresses 'Today' show security breach after intruder confronted him backstage
A man had allegedly bypassed security and approached Melvin while searching for fellow 'Today' host Al Roker

Craig Melvin has spoken out after a frightening security breach at NBC's Today show studios, reassuring viewers that he is "doing just fine" following an incident in which an intruder entered a restricted area and confronted him backstage.
The veteran broadcaster returned to the morning programme one day after the incident, opening Friday's broadcast alongside Laura Jarrett. Before going back on air, Melvin thanked fans for their concern in a message shared on social media.
"Hey everyone. I've heard from so many of you over the last few hours. I'm doing just fine," Melvin wrote. "Thanks for reaching out. I'm looking forward to seeing you tomorrow morning on @todayshow."
The alarming incident unfolded on Thursday morning at NBC's Rockefeller Plaza studios in New York City when a man allegedly bypassed security and entered an unauthorised area near Studio 1A. According to law enforcement sources, the individual approached Melvin while reportedly searching for fellow Today co-host Al Roker.
Authorities allege the suspect shouted racial slurs at Melvin before the anchor immediately alerted security. The man was quickly detained by law enforcement, and no injuries or physical altercation were reported.
NBC News later confirmed the breach in an official statement.
"An individual entered an unauthorized area in a vestibule near Studio 1A. The person approached anchor Craig Melvin, who alerted security," the network said. "The individual was detained and taken into custody by law enforcement without further incident. There was no altercation, and no one was injured."
The network added that it is cooperating fully with investigators and has begun reviewing its security procedures.
"NBC and TODAY take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff and guests extremely seriously. We are reviewing the incident and our security protocols and remain committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios."
Police later identified the suspect as Andrew Truelove, 41, who now faces multiple charges, including hate crime burglary, hate crime menacing, hate crime criminal trespass and harassment. The investigation remains ongoing.
Despite the frightening encounter, Melvin returned to work the following morning as planned. His upcoming absence from Today, which begins next week, is unrelated to the security incident and had been scheduled in advance.
