Adam Carolla has come under heavy criticism after making controversial remarks about Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and their family during a recent podcast discussion, with one hypothetical comment drawing particularly strong backlash across social media.

The comedian and podcast host, who has spoken positively about Pitt on previous occasions and has worked with the actor professionally, offered his views on the former couple's long running legal dispute while discussing the public fallout from their separation.

During the conversation, Carolla described Jolie as "nuts" and claimed she had "brainwashed" the children she shares with Pitt. He did not provide evidence to support those assertions, presenting them as his personal opinion about the family situation that has remained in the public eye since Jolie filed for divorce in 2016.

His strongest criticism centred on how he believes the relationship between Pitt and his children has evolved during the years of legal proceedings. Those comments quickly spread online, prompting sharp reactions from both supporters and critics.

The greatest controversy, however, came from a hypothetical example involving Carolla's own upbringing. While discussing allegations surrounding Pitt and Jolie's relationship, Carolla suggested that if he had witnessed his father "rough up" his mother while continuing to enjoy the benefits of a wealthy lifestyle, including private jets and luxury living, he would "probably look the other way."

The remark immediately generated criticism, with many people arguing that it appeared to minimise allegations involving domestic violence. Others interpreted the comment as an attempt to argue that wealth and privilege can complicate family relationships, although many still questioned both the comparison and its wording.

The renewed attention has also brought focus back to the lengthy legal history between Pitt and Jolie.

The actors separated in 2016 following an incident aboard a private aircraft that became the subject of investigations by both the FBI and the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services. Authorities ultimately did not file criminal charges against Pitt, and the investigations concluded without charges being brought.

Despite that outcome, the allegations connected to the flight have continued to feature prominently throughout years of legal proceedings between the former couple.

Since their separation, Pitt and Jolie have been involved in multiple disputes concerning custody arrangements, financial matters and ownership of Château Miraval, the French winery they once owned together. While their divorce was eventually finalised, several legal issues connected to shared assets continued beyond the end of their marriage.

Carolla's comments have once again placed the highly publicised case at the centre of public discussion.

Reaction online has remained deeply divided. Some people defended Carolla's right to express his opinion and argued that Pitt has faced years of negative public attention. Others accused the comedian of unfairly attacking Jolie and the couple's children while dismissing allegations that have formed a significant part of the family's legal history.

Neither Pitt nor Jolie has publicly responded to Carolla's latest remarks.
