Will Smith reveals why he turned down Neo in 'The Matrix'
Will Smith recalled why he passed on playing Neo in 'The Matrix'

Will Smith has once again opened up about passing on the role of Neo in The Matrix, revealing that the filmmakers' original pitch failed to convince him about the groundbreaking sci-fi film.
Speaking in a recent interview, Smith recalled that he was initially offered the lead role, while Val Kilmer was being considered to play Morpheus.
"I had Neo. It was going to be me, and Val Kilmer was Morpheus," Smith said.
Explaining why he declined the opportunity, the actor admitted he couldn't understand the filmmakers' vision after hearing their explanation of the movie's innovative visual effects.
"I'm going to give you the exact pitch they gave me," Smith said. "So what we're thinking is we're going to design these cameras. It's not one camera, it's like 30 cameras... they'll all go off at one time. You'll be able to jump, but you'll stop jumping. You'll be able to freeze."

Smith said the description didn't sell him on the project at the time.
"That didn't sell me on that. I'm passing that to you, bro," he recalled.
After The Matrix was released in 1999 and became a global phenomenon, Smith realized what the filmmakers had been trying to describe.
"And then I saw it, I was like, 'That's what actually happens. That's so cool,'" he said. "Yeah, I missed The Matrix. I missed that one."
The role ultimately went to Keanu Reeves, whose portrayal of Neo became one of the most iconic performances in modern science fiction cinema.
