KARACHI:

Pakistani actor and writer Mohammad Ahmed has criticised what he described as the growing trend of seeking online fame by attacking others instead of focusing on meaningful work, saying social media has turned criticism into a shortcut to popularity.

In a video message, the actor used satire to question the mindset of people who, according to him, resort to insulting colleagues and public figures to gain attention when they are struggling professionally.

"If you don't have a job, people think you're a failure," he said, before sarcastically suggesting that the easiest way to become relevant is to "start saying bad things about others" because it brings likes, views and viral videos.

The actor mocked the idea of targeting fellow artists for online engagement, asking whether he should criticise performers who spend hours working in extreme heat just to appear on screen for a few minutes.

He also defended directors, describing the demanding nature of their work. He said directors spend long hours managing every aspect of a production from actors' performances and dialogue delivery to costumes and the overall set often working until their voices give out.

Continuing his satirical remarks, he said that while he may not have work himself, insulting others would be an easy way to attract attention online.

"It's so easy. Just insult someone. Say whatever comes to your mind and you'll get likes," he said, ending his message by asking viewers whether he should also follow the same path.

Recently veteran actor Bushra Ansari also called for greater respect within Pakistan's entertainment industry. Responding to criticism directed at fellow artists, Ansari said public insults and personal attacks against colleagues were inappropriate, arguing that it was the responsibility of directors not social media, to help actors improve their craft.
