‘Free Willy’ returns as Warner Bros revives beloved family classic with Russo brothers producing
Original 1993 family favourite inspired wildlife awareness while earning $153.7m worldwide and spawning lasting legacy

Warner Bros is bringing one of its most beloved family adventures back to cinemas, with a new reimagining of Free Willy officially in development. The project marks the latest attempt to revive a well known film franchise for modern audiences while preserving the emotional story that made the original a worldwide success.
According to confirmed studio announcements, the reboot will be produced by Anthony and Joe Russo's production company AGBO, with writers Mary Margaret Kunze and Jade Halley Bartlett developing the screenplay. The pair previously collaborated on Miller's Girl, while Bartlett also wrote and directed the film. Kunze has built an extensive career behind the scenes, serving in production roles on several Marvel television projects before working on more recent streaming productions.
Released in 1993, the original Free Willy became an unexpected box office hit. The family drama followed orphaned teenager Jesse, played by Jason James Richter, as he formed an unlikely friendship with an orca named Willy before trying to free the animal from captivity. Produced on an estimated $20m budget, the film earned approximately $153.7m worldwide and quickly became one of Warner Bros' defining family titles of the 1990s.
The film also left a cultural impact beyond cinemas. Keiko, the real orca that portrayed Willy, became an international symbol in conversations surrounding captive marine mammals. Public interest generated by the film contributed to efforts aimed at improving Keiko's welfare, eventually leading to an internationally supported rehabilitation programme and release into the wild. Although Keiko later died in Norway in 2003, his story remained closely linked with the legacy of the film.
Music also played a major role in the original's popularity. Michael Jackson recorded "Will You Be There" as the film's theme song, with the track becoming a worldwide hit and reaching the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its success helped strengthen the film's emotional connection with audiences and remains closely associated with the franchise.
The success of the first film led to multiple sequels, an animated television series and a direct to video continuation, turning Free Willy into a lasting family entertainment franchise throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.
Warner Bros has not revealed plot details for the reboot, leaving questions over whether the story will closely follow the original or introduce an entirely new generation of characters. Lauren Shuler Donner, who helped guide the franchise from its earliest days, returns as an executive producer, providing continuity between the original films and the upcoming adaptation. Jesse Ehrman and Cate Adams are overseeing the project for the studio, while Courtney Baker is attached as co producer.
The announcement reflects Hollywood's continued interest in revisiting recognisable film properties with established audiences. Recent years have seen studios increasingly invest in reimagined versions of classic films, hoping to attract nostalgic viewers while introducing familiar stories to younger generations.
