Erling Haaland has revealed an amusing celebrity misunderstanding after admitting he accidentally ignored a direct message from Tom Holland because he had no idea who the actor was.

The Manchester City and Norway striker shared the story during an appearance on the Norwegian interview programme A Laget, explaining that he rarely watches films and therefore failed to recognise the Hollywood star behind Peter Parker in Marvel's Spider Man franchise.

According to Haaland, the incident happened while he was in Monaco during the Formula 1 weekend. He received a message from someone asking whether they could meet for dinner, but because the name and profile were unfamiliar to him, he assumed it had come from a random person and chose not to respond.

Reflecting on the awkward moment, Haaland admitted he now finds the situation embarrassing.

"Yes, of course. This is a bit embarrassing, to be completely honest," he said. "We were in Monaco at the Formula 1, and then I got a message. I do not watch movies much, so I have no idea who people are. There was one asking if we could go out for dinner, but I had never seen him, so I did not bother to answer. I did not want to answer an unknown person."

It was only later that Haaland realised the message had come from Holland, one of the world's most recognisable young actors thanks to his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Spider Man.

After discovering the mistake, the Norwegian striker laughed at himself and suggested he might finally get back in touch.

"I think I will have to send him a message now. I had completely forgotten about it," he added.

The light hearted exchange quickly attracted attention online, with many fans amused that two of the biggest names in sport and entertainment had unknowingly missed an opportunity to meet because of a simple case of mistaken identity.

Haaland's comments also offered an insight into his life away from football. While many elite athletes closely follow popular films and television, the prolific goalscorer admitted that cinema is not a major interest for him. Instead, his focus remains largely on football, a commitment reflected in his remarkable performances for both club and country over recent seasons.

Holland, meanwhile, has developed friendships with several high profile athletes through his work and public appearances. The British actor has frequently attended major sporting events and has become one of Hollywood's most recognisable stars since making his debut as Spider Man in Captain America: Civil War before leading multiple standalone Marvel films.

The story also highlights how social media interactions can sometimes lead to unexpected misunderstandings, even between internationally famous figures. While millions of fans would instantly recognise either celebrity, Haaland's admission demonstrates that global fame in one industry does not necessarily translate into recognition outside personal interests.

Both men continue to enjoy hugely successful careers. Haaland remains one of football's most prolific goalscorers and a central figure for Manchester City and Norway, while Holland continues to balance major Hollywood productions with future projects beyond the Marvel franchise.
