KARACHI:

Mike Hesson has backed the newly introduced central contracts system that would help players perform better in all formats.

In an exclusive interview with Express Tribune, Mike Hessonstated that the new central contracts allow players to focus on the formats they want to play and perform better in, rather than trying to master all three formats equally. Often, players are unable to give proper attention to formats in which they are less effective, these contracts will help players focus in the right direction.

He added that initially there was some confusion among cricketers regarding the contracts, but once their questions were addressed, they began to see the advantages, the true value of these contracts will become even more evident once they are fully implemented.

He noted that some young players in the camp have been particularly impressive. Fast bowler Abdul Subhan has performed exceptionally well in Under-19 cricket. He is tall and bowls with a good line and length. As he becomes stronger, his pace will increase further. He is a talented bowler, and we are looking forward to his development.

Regarding Pakistan’s underwhelming performances in last few ICC tournaments, Mike Hesson said that if we look at the last four events, the team failed to progress beyond the group stage in three of them. However, in the most recent event (T20 World Cup 2026), we managed to advance past the group stage. Unfortunately, the match against New Zealand was washed out due to rain. Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka but lost a thrilling contest against England. We were very close to reaching the semi-finals but missed some key opportunities. Nevertheless, our performance was significantly better compared to previous events.

Speaking about preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, the coach said that a domestic tournament will begin in August, featuring the country’s top 50 white-ball players. The intense competition will provide an opportunity to assess a wider pool of players and select the best possible squad. We are also trying to arrange additional triangular series alongside the ODI series.

He added that playing in Zimbabwe will help the team gain experience in conditions similar to those of the World Cup. It will not be easy to play in South Africa, Zimbabwe, or Namibia during the tournament, as the pitches vary challenging. Johannesburg offers more bounce and high-scoring matches, while Cape Town has slower pitches that assist spin bowling. We are preparing players for different conditions so they can perform well in all situations.

Responding to a question about recent defeats against traditional rival India in ICC and ACC events, Mike Hesson said that at present, India is the best white-ball team in the world and is consistently achieving success. It is not just Pakistan other top teams are also struggling against them. Although Ireland recently defeated India in both matches, it was their first setback after 16 consecutive t20 series wins. The Indian team has set a benchmark that all aim to reach.

Regarding leadership, Mike Hesson said that Shaheen Shah Afridi has done a good job captaining the ODI side. He noted that captaining as a fast bowler is always a challenge, but Shaheen has performed admirably. Under his leadership, Pakistan has won three out of four series, including victories against strong teams.

When asked about removing Salman Ali Agha from T20 captaincy, the coach responded that he has quickly learned during his time in Pakistan not to react to rumors.

Speaking about Babar Azam, Hesson said that he performed very well in the PSL and scored plenty of runs. He has the ability to adapt to different conditions, but competition for places in the team is very tough.

The coach said that a decline in fast bowlers’ pace can sometimes be due to personal reasons and at other times due to excessive bowling workload. If you want to bowl fast, it is essential to manage workload properly. No player can bowl fast throughout the entire year. Therefore, instead of overburdening them and using them continuously, fast bowlers should be used in short, aggressive spells rather than as mere stock bowlers, as that approach offers little benefit.

Mike Hesson said that Pakistan has several power hitters such as Abdul Samad, Farhan Yousuf, Haider Ali, and Usman Khan. Shadab Khan is an excellent finisher. The team needs players who can consistently perform at the international level.

Regarding a possible camp in the United States, the coach said that there is currently no new update. However, some players will be sent to different camps so they can learn in diverse environments and gain valuable experience.
