Daisy Edgar-Jones stars in first trailer for new 'Sense and Sensibility' adaptation

Jane Austen's novel follows sisters Elinor and Marianne as they pursue love and security

The first trailer for Sense and Sensibility has been unveiled, offering audiences a fresh look at director Georgia Oakley’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s beloved 1811 novel and showcasing Daisy Edgar-Jones as Elinor Dashwood. The film is set to arrive in cinemas later this year.

The trailer introduces the Dashwood sisters as they navigate love, heartbreak and financial uncertainty after the death of their father leaves the family in a precarious position. Edgar-Jones leads the cast as the sensible and reserved Elinor, while Esmé Creed-Miles plays her passionate younger sister Marianne.

Joining the pair are Caitríona Balfe as Mrs Dashwood, George MacKay as Edward Ferrars, Frank Dillane as John Willoughby, Herbert Nordrum as Colonel Brandon, Bodhi Rae Breathnach as Margaret Dashwood and Fiona Shaw as Mrs Jennings.

Oakley, best known for Blue Jean, has described her take on the classic story as grounded and authentic, focusing on the emotional realities faced by the Dashwood family rather than presenting an idealised vision of Regency England. The filmmaker has said she wanted audiences to feel immersed in the everyday lives of the characters while highlighting Austen’s observations about class, inheritance and women’s place in society.

The screenplay comes from novelist Diana Reid, with the adaptation aiming to introduce a new generation of viewers to one of Austen’s most enduring stories. Oakley has also expressed hopes that newcomers unfamiliar with previous versions of Sense and Sensibility will connect with the film on its own terms.

Based on Austen’s first published novel, Sense and Sensibility follows sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood as they pursue love and security while confronting the social expectations of early 19th-century England.

Sense and Sensibility is scheduled to be released in UK cinemas on September 25, 2026, before opening in the United States on October 16, 2026.
