Mindy Kaling discusses 'Not Suitable For Work' season 2 plans, character futures and romantic cliffhangers post-finale

Mindy Kaling has shared an update on the future of Hulu comedy series Not Suitable For Work following its season one finale, discussing potential storylines, character developments and the possibility of a second season.
The nine-episode first season concluded with a two-part holiday finale that left several major characters facing new professional and personal challenges. The finale saw Josh (Jack Martin), Abby (Avantika) and Kel (Nicholas Duvernay) experience career changes, while Davis (Will Angus) faced uncertainty after losing his job. The episodes also introduced new romantic complications involving AJ (Ella Hunt), Davis and Kel’s growing connection with a theatre colleague.
Kaling confirmed that a writers’ room has already been opened for a potential Not Suitable For Work season 2, although Hulu has not officially renewed the series. She said she remains hopeful about continuing the ensemble comedy and praised the cast’s enthusiasm and support for the show.
The creator also discussed the future of Jay Ellis’ character Bill after his dramatic breakup with AJ. Kaling said she would like the actor to return, explaining that relationships and breakups can continue to affect characters even after romantic storylines end.
Other possible returns include Ego Nwodim’s Kate and Harry Richardson’s Austin, with Kaling expressing interest in bringing back several supporting characters. She also highlighted the chemistry between Avantika and Nicholas Duvernay’s characters Abby and Kel, teasing more possibilities if the series returns.
Not Suitable For Work follows a group of young professionals navigating careers, relationships and personal growth in New York City. The series continues Kaling’s work in television comedy after projects including The Office, The Mindy Project and Netflix’s Running Point.
While season two remains unconfirmed, Kaling said she hopes the series can continue exploring its characters and their evolving relationships.
