Anthony Fantano fires back after Halsey calls out his 'Great Impersonator' review
Anthony Fantano addresses Halsey feud after criticism over his harsh review of 'The Great Impersonator' album

Music critic and content creator Anthony Fantano has responded to the ongoing backlash surrounding his review of Halsey’s album The Great Impersonator, after the pop star criticised his comments online.
The controversy began after Fantano, host of the popular YouTube channel The Needle Drop, referenced his previous review of Halsey’s 2024 album. Halsey responded by accusing the critic of unfairly targeting her work and suggesting that his criticism reflected a broader online culture of negativity.
I’m certain my least memorable song will be remembered more fondly and for more time than anything you ever do with your life will be. Everything you say is more “whiny” and “edgy” than I was at any point on that album. But at least I had the excuse of going through chemo. https://t.co/h2dFzOqpKH

Fantano’s original review, released in October 2024, gave The Great Impersonator a low score and criticised several aspects of the album, including its songwriting and musical direction. The critic argued that his opinion was based solely on the music and not on Halsey’s personal experiences or health struggles that influenced the project.
Speaking to Variety about the backlash, Fantano said the criticism had created a false narrative that he disliked the album because of Halsey’s illness or identity. He defended his review, saying his comments were focused on the creative choices behind the record rather than personal attacks.
Fantano also rejected claims that his criticism was motivated by misogyny, pointing to his history of supporting and praising female artists throughout his career. He said listeners do not have to agree with his reviews but argued that disliking an album does not make him an enemy of the artist.
The music critic also addressed accusations about his past online presence, including criticism linked to older internet content. Fantano described himself as someone whose work has evolved over the years and said his career has been built on music criticism rather than online controversy.
