'Klara and the Sun' trailer reveals Jenna Ortega’s emotional AI journey
Jenna Ortega stars as an AI companion in Taika Waititi’s sci-fi adaptation Klara and the Sun based on Ishiguro’s novel

The first trailer for Klara and the Sun, Taika Waititi’s upcoming sci-fi adaptation, has been released, giving fans a first look at Jenna Ortega as a robot designed to fight loneliness.
Based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s bestselling novel of the same name, the film is set in a dystopian near-future world where artificial intelligence companions have become part of everyday life. Ortega stars as Klara, a solar-powered Artificial Friend purchased to support a young girl named Josie, played by Mia Tharia, who is living with a mysterious illness.
The story follows Klara as she tries to understand human emotions, relationships and the meaning of connection while navigating her role as a companion. Amy Adams plays Josie’s mother, who brings Klara into their home, while Natasha Lyonne, Aran Murphy and Steve Buscemi also appear in supporting roles.
Klara and the Sun marks another major project for Ortega following her success in Wednesday and recent film appearances. The movie is directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Taika Waititi, known for projects including Jojo Rabbit and Thor: Ragnarok.
Sony’s 3000 Pictures acquired the film rights to Ishiguro’s novel in 2020, with Dahvi Waller writing the screenplay. Ishiguro serves as an executive producer, while David Heyman, Garrett Basch and Waititi produce the adaptation.
The film explores themes of artificial intelligence, love, loneliness and what it means to be human. With its combination of a celebrated novel, an acclaimed director and a star-led cast, Klara and the Sun is expected to be one of the most anticipated sci-fi movies of the year.
Klara and the Sun is scheduled to arrive in theatres on October 23.
