Father, uncle get life sentences for honour killing

A local court has sentenced the father and maternal uncle of 14-year-old American-Pakistani girl Hira to life imprisonment after convicting them of her murder, a case that has ignited nationwide debate over honour killings and the safety of young female content creators in Pakistan.

Additional District and Sessions Judge-X delivered the verdict on Saturday, finding Anwarul Haq Rajput and Muhammad Tayyab Bhatti guilty of the crime. The court also imposed a fine of Rs200,000 on each convict.

The tragic incident unfolded after Hira's family returned to Balochistan following 25 years of living in the United States. Tension escalated within the household as relatives strongly disapproved of Hira's active presence on TikTok, where she posted lifestyle videos featuring modern attire and open expression, activities they viewed as contrary to traditional values.

Hira was fatally shot on a Quetta street. Her father initially tried to mislead investigators by claiming unidentified gunmen were responsible. However, police investigations and interrogations dismantled the cover-up, leading both men to confess that they killed the teenager because of her social media activity.

The high-profile trial has drawn intense public scrutiny and condemnation. By firmly rejecting any cultural or honour-based justification for the murder, the court's ruling sends a powerful message against domestic violence and honour-related crimes targeting minors.
