The Punjab Home Department has intensified preparations to maintain law and order during Muharram, holding a series of meetings with religious scholars and community leaders from various schools of thought across the province.
According to officials, consultations have been held in Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujrat, Multan, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sahiwal, Dera Ghazi Khan, Mianwali, Jhang and other districts to discuss security arrangements for Muharram processions and religious gatherings, particularly during Ashura.
In Gujranwala Division, the Cabinet Committee on Law and Order reviewed Muharram security arrangements at a high-level meeting. Authorities announced that eight companies of the Pakistan Army and 11 companies of Rangers would be deployed to assist police in maintaining peace and security during the holy month.
Officials said comprehensive arrangements have been finalized for 6,858 religious gatherings (majalis) and 1,588 processions in Gujranwala and Gujrat divisions. Orders for the restriction and monitoring of 353 religious speakers and zakireen have also been issued as part of the security plan.
Meanwhile, the Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province from 1st to 10th Muharram to ensure public safety and promote religious harmony.
Under the restrictions, pillion riding will be banned on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, except for senior citizens, women, Rescue 1122 personnel, and law enforcement officials. Other restrictions under Section 144 will remain in force throughout the first ten days of Muharram.
The Home Department said a complete ban has been imposed on the public display of weapons, explosives, and other hazardous materials without prior permission from the competent authority. Authorities have also prohibited provocative slogans, gestures, and actions that may hurt religious sentiments or incite sectarian tensions.
