The search for Nancy Guthrie, the missing mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, has taken a dramatic new turn after a volunteer search group in Mexico received an anonymous tip claiming the 84-year-old was buried near the US-Mexico border.

According to People, the volunteer organisation Buscando Corazones Nogales was told that Nancy's remains could be located near Mariposa, an area close to Nogales in Sonora, Mexico. The group said it received the anonymous information in May and has since carried out multiple searches in the region.

The group's leader, Ramona Guadalupe Ayala Ortiz, told local media that the tip alleged Nancy was buried near a stream in the area. Volunteers conducted an initial search on May 16 but found no evidence to support the claim. After receiving additional information through a second anonymous call, searchers returned to the site on June 10, but again came up empty-handed. A third search is reportedly planned.

Authorities in Arizona have acknowledged the reports but stressed that no evidence has yet been found linking Nancy Guthrie to the location. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said investigators are aware of the tip, though Mexican authorities have not formally contacted his office regarding the searches.

Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her Tucson, Arizona, home on February 1, 2026. Investigators have long maintained that she did not leave voluntarily and are treating the case as a suspected abduction. Surveillance footage, forensic evidence and other investigative leads have been examined over the past several months, but no arrests have been made and no suspects have been publicly identified.

The case has drawn national attention, with Savannah Guthrie repeatedly appealing for information about her mother's whereabouts. The family has continued to urge anyone with credible information to come forward as investigators pursue leads on both sides of the border.

Despite the latest tip, officials emphasise that there is currently no confirmation that Nancy was taken to Mexico or that any grave connected to her has been discovered. The investigation remains active as law enforcement and volunteer groups continue searching for answers more than four months after her disappearance.
