'Mandalorian and Grogu' falls out of top five after 61% third-weekend box office drop
'Mandalorian and Grogu' slipped to sixth place after 61% weekend drop, as 'Backrooms' and 'Obsession' led cinemas

Disney and Lucasfilm's Mandalorian and Grogu has fallen out of the domestic box office top five after recording a 61% decline in its third weekend in cinemas.
According to projections cited in the report, the Star Wars film is expected to earn $9.5 million during its third weekend, placing it in sixth position at the North American box office. The result would bring its domestic total to approximately $155.3 million.
Directed by Jon Favreau, Mandalorian and Grogu serves as a continuation of the Disney+ television series and stars Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin, alongside Sigourney Weaver as new character Colonel Ward.
The film had already faced challenges following its Memorial Day opening weekend. It debuted with $98 million domestically over the four-day holiday period, below the $103 million earned by Solo: A Star Wars Story during the same holiday frame in 2018.
In its second weekend, the film experienced a 69% decline in ticket sales before posting another significant drop in its third frame.
The report noted that the production budget for the film was $165 million, with global marketing costs estimated at more than $100 million.
Meanwhile, independent releases continued to perform strongly. A24's Backrooms is projected to earn $25.7 million in its second weekend, taking its domestic total to $134.8 million.
Focus Features' Obsession is expected to add $24.8 million, increasing its domestic earnings to more than $151 million.
Another challenger came from The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act, distributed by Fathom Events, which is projected to debut with $22.1 million from 2,221 cinemas.
