Seven years after the end of Game of Thrones, former co stars Kit Harington and Peter Dinklage have reunited for a candid conversation about fame, family, sobriety and the lasting impact of one of television's most influential dramas.

The pair sat down for Variety and quickly reflected on how much their lives have changed since the HBO fantasy phenomenon concluded in 2019. Harington, now starring in HBO's Industry, admitted that the overwhelming success of Game of Thrones was difficult to process as a young actor.

Harington recalled that he had little understanding of the scale of the production when filming began. He knew HBO through The Sopranos and was simply grateful to have secured a role. As the series grew into a global sensation, however, he found the attention increasingly difficult to handle.

Dinklage, who won multiple Emmy Awards for his portrayal of Tyrion Lannister, said his experience differed because he was raising a young family during much of the show's run. While many cast members travelled and embraced the spotlight, he spent much of his time in Belfast with his daughter, building a routine away from the growing frenzy surrounding the series.

One of the most revealing moments of the discussion came when Harington reflected on the period immediately after Game of Thrones ended. He disclosed that he entered rehab as the eighth and final season began airing, explaining that he needed time to address his sobriety and mental wellbeing.

Rather than promoting the final season, Harington stepped away from public life and later took an extended break from acting. The pause was lengthened further by the arrival of the Covid pandemic, giving him additional time to reassess both his personal life and professional future.

The actor said he spent much of his years on Game of Thrones drawing from emotional pain to portray Jon Snow and only later realised the importance of finding greater joy and balance in his work. That perspective eventually led him to join Industry, where he felt able to explore humour alongside drama.

Dinklage also discussed the challenges that followed the end of the series. Although Game of Thrones helped transform perceptions of fantasy characters and opened new opportunities, he admitted he was surprised that some old industry stereotypes still persisted after the show's success.

Since then, Dinklage has focused largely on projects he genuinely wants to pursue, including smaller films and personal creative ventures. He said he no longer feels compelled to accept work that fails to excite him.

The conversation also touched on parenthood, ageing and social media. Both actors agreed that raising children has reshaped their priorities. Dinklage noted that his children now influence many of his professional decisions, while Harington joked that he has begun questioning how much on screen nudity his children may eventually see.

Despite spending nearly a decade together on one of television's biggest productions, the actors admitted they had not seen each other since the series concluded. Yet their reunion demonstrated that the bond formed during those years remains strong.

As the discussion came to a close, the two exchanged heartfelt words of affection, a reminder that while the world of Westeros may be long gone, the friendships forged there continue to endure.
