Marvel's Wolverine trailer sparks debate as fans question 'ungory' graphic combat
Marvel's Wolverine gameplay prompts debate as fans discuss blood effects, realism and missing gore

Marvel's Wolverine generated significant discussion on X following its latest gameplay reveal during PlayStation's June 2026 State of Play presentation, with many players questioning its gore effects.
While the trailer showcased extensive blood effects during combat, a number of fans argued that the presentation relied more on large blood sprays than realistic injury details.
why does gore look so ungory in everything now https://t.co/0O6eQNAm4C

One user wrote, “Yeah I was thinking this while watching the state of Play, it was bloody, sure, but like, unnecessarily bloody. There wasn't any "real" gore, like it was blood blood blood, but at that point it might as well have been paint lol”.
Others criticised the way blood appeared during combat. Joel Pollack posted, “Honestly the blood effects just look stupid in this game, like everyone is wearing the most aggressive squibs ever made. Wolverine likely grazes a guy and he just pops like a blood balloon, it’s goofy as shit, especially since it evaporates two seconds later.”
Several reactions focused on the absence of dismemberment despite Wolverine's claws being central to the combat system.
One commenter wrote that the issue stemmed from a “Lack of any guts or dismemberment,” while other users argued that the blood effects lacked realism and appeared disconnected from the wounds being inflicted.
Philip K. Dih commented, “bc its jus a blood bomb goin off, no ones bleedin from a specific place,” while another fan pointed out how, “The blood just vanishes.”
Some players compared the game to franchises known for graphic violence. One user argued that Doom and Mortal Kombat remain stronger examples of gore systems because of their use of dismemberment and visible damage effects.
Some fans, on the other hand, suggested that widespread exposure to graphic content online may have altered expectations around violence in games, making modern effects appear less convincing by comparison.
The debate emerged shortly after Insomniac Games highlighted Marvel's Wolverine as a mature title featuring graphic combat.
