Shaquille O’Neal joins Archie Comics for ‘Vengeance Unchained: The Legend of Black Caesar’
Writer Stephanie Williams and artist Ray Anthony Height will bring the historical inspired adventure to shelves later

Shaquille O’Neal is adding comic book creator to his long list of accomplishments after teaming up with Archie Comics to develop a new series titled Vengeance Unchained: The Legend of Black Caesar.
The former NBA superstar has partnered with the iconic publisher on a project that reimagines the story of Black Caesar, a legendary figure often associated with tales of piracy in the Caribbean. The comic series is being written by Stephanie Williams, while artwork will be handled by Ray Anthony Height and Studio Sky Tiger.
According to the official description, the story follows an African king of extraordinary stature whose life is transformed after he is forced from royalty into slavery. As he searches for his kidnapped love, he embarks on a journey that leads him into piracy and a fight for freedom. The narrative explores themes of resilience, survival and self determination against the backdrop of the Caribbean.
O’Neal said the project appealed to him because of its focus on perseverance and personal strength. He explained that he has always been drawn to stories about warriors who refuse to surrender in the face of overwhelming challenges.
In a statement announcing the partnership, O’Neal described Black Caesar as a figure who loses everything before reclaiming his freedom on his own terms. He added that the story is intended not only to entertain readers but also to encourage reflection about struggle, courage and determination.
The basketball Hall of Famer also expressed enthusiasm about working with Archie Comics, a publisher whose characters have remained popular across multiple generations. O’Neal said collaborating with a company that has played such an important role in comic book history made the project especially meaningful.
Archie Comics is best known for long running titles such as Archie, Jughead and Betty and Veronica. The publisher is also home to beloved properties including Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Josie and the Pussycats. In recent years, the company has expanded beyond its traditional teen comedy roots with a variety of new genres and storytelling approaches.
The new Black Caesar series represents another example of that evolution. Rather than focusing on the familiar residents of Riverdale, Vengeance Unchained aims to deliver a historical inspired adventure featuring action, conflict and larger than life characters.
Development of the project is being overseen by Colin Smeeton, Mike Parris and Matthew Gross through O’Neal’s Jersey Legends Productions and Authentic Studios. The involvement of O’Neal’s production team highlights the former athlete’s growing interest in entertainment ventures beyond television, film and sports media.
O’Neal has spent years building a successful post basketball career that includes broadcasting, business investments and content production. This latest collaboration with Archie Comics gives him an opportunity to help bring a new mythology driven story to readers while working with one of the most recognisable names in publishing.
Vengeance Unchained: The Legend of Black Caesar is scheduled to arrive on shelves later in 2026.
