Cemetery visits become costly affair
.

Prices of flowers, floral petals, grave coverings, incense sticks and rose water traditionally used for visiting graveyards during Eid have surged sharply across open markets in Rawalpindi, adding further financial strain on families already burdened by inflation.
Despite the increase in prices, large numbers of residents have continued purchasing floral offerings and related items as part of preparations to visit cemeteries during Eid in remembrance of their departed loved ones resting in eternal peace.
Across the city's 55 graveyards, between five and 10 temporary stalls and handcarts selling flowers and ceremonial items have been set up outside each cemetery, while shopkeepers have also stocked additional supplies in anticipation of increased Eid demand.
According to market rates, flower petals are currently being sold at around Rs500 per kilogramme, while decorative floral sheets used for graves have risen to approximately Rs1,400 each. Bottles of rose water are retailing at Rs200, while packets of incense sticks are also being sold for nearly Rs200.
Meanwhile, grave diggers and caretakers have reportedly increased charges for cleaning graves and re-plastering earthen graves with fresh soil, with labour costs now reaching around Rs500 per grave.
Residents have also expressed serious concern over the deteriorating condition of graveyards across the city, alleging that many cemeteries have not undergone proper cleaning for a prolonged period.
As a result, wild overgrown bushes, cannabis plants and dense vegetation reaching heights of up to four feet have spread extensively throughout several graveyards, severely obstructing visibility and access.
