Olivia Wilde’s latest directorial feature, The Invite, is set for a nationwide theatrical release on June 26 through A24 following its debut at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

The R-rated comedy-drama stars Wilde alongside Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton in an English-language adaptation of the Spanish film The People Upstairs.

The story centres on a dinner party between neighbours that develops into a wider examination of marriage, desire and suburban relationships.

According to the report, A24 secured the film in a competitive Sundance bidding process valued at more than $10 million. The acquisition followed the film’s premiere at Sundance on January 24, where it reportedly received a standing ovation.

The Invite marks Wilde’s third feature as director following Booksmart in 2019 and Don’t Worry Darling in 2022. In addition to directing, Wilde stars in the film as Angela, a woman navigating difficulties in her marriage to Joe, played by Rogen.

The screenplay was adapted by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones from the original Spanish source material. The film largely unfolds over the course of one evening, focusing on conversations and shifting dynamics between the four main characters.

The cast also includes Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton as the couple’s neighbours. Reports surrounding the project highlighted the film’s mature themes and dialogue-driven structure.

The production has generated discussion following early reviews from Sundance. The report noted that reactions from critics and audiences differed, with some viewers responding positively to the film’s dark humour and others commenting on its confrontational tone.

A24 is expected to release the film initially in select cinemas before a wider rollout. The Invite joins a growing slate of adult-focused dramas distributed by the studio in recent years.
