Subnautica 2 has sparked mixed reactions among fans online after developers reiterated that the upcoming survival game is not designed around combat.

The discussion followed comments made on the game’s official Discord, where players questioned why most creatures in the underwater world cannot be killed.

A level designer, responded to the discussion:

Another developer added that the team continues to discuss potential systems internally, noting, “The team discusses this a lot inside the studio and may let players catch small fish for food, but large creatures will stay safe so the game feels right.”

However, the response triggered widespread discussion across social platforms, with some users describing the tone as dismissive.

One post read, “that's got to be the dumbest response i've heard,” while others suggested it echoed a familiar “if you don’t like it don’t play it” stance that has historically divided gaming communities.

Some players argued that limited defensive options would still fit within a survival framework.

One user said that in the first game, combat was mostly limited but still functional for survival needs, while suggesting that “having a bunch of offensive options would just feel out of place,” though minor endgame tools could work.

Whereas another comment stated, “Ah yes, I'm not allowed to defend myself from extremely aggressive predators. How progressive of them,” while another added, “most of the ocean life is actively trying to kill you. But don’t you dare think about fighting back. That’s just wrong!”

A fan-made modification has already introduced creature-killing mechanics, showing ongoing interest in more combat flexibility.

However, developers have stated they are monitoring feedback while not planning to add weapons, instead exploring non-lethal deterrent systems.

Subnautica 2 will remain in early access for up to three years as development continues and systems are refined.
